What Is Technical SEO

Technical SEO covers the behind-the-scenes work that helps search engines crawl and index your site. Learn what it involves and why it matters.

Definition

Technical SEO is the behind-the-scenes work that ensures search engines can properly crawl, understand, and index your website. It has nothing to do with the words on your pages or the links pointing to your site -- those fall under on-page and off-page SEO. Instead, technical SEO focuses on site speed, mobile-friendliness, secure connections (HTTPS), clean URL structures, XML sitemaps, structured data, and eliminating errors that could prevent search engines from accessing your content. Think of it as making sure the foundations of your house are solid before you start decorating.

Why It Matters

You can produce outstanding content and earn powerful backlinks, but if search engines cannot crawl your site efficiently or if pages load too slowly, your rankings will suffer regardless. Technical issues are invisible to most business owners because the site might look fine in a browser. But search engine bots see the site differently — broken links, duplicate content, missing tags, and slow server responses all create friction. Fixing these issues is often the fastest way to unlock ranking improvements, because you are removing barriers rather than building something new. It is also increasingly important as Google uses page experience signals like Core Web Vitals as ranking factors.

Example

A property management company has 200 pages on their website but notices that only 80 are appearing in Google’s index. A technical SEO audit reveals that a misconfigured robots.txt file is blocking Google from accessing half the site, several pages have duplicate content issues, and the site takes over five seconds to load on mobile. After fixing the robots.txt, adding canonical tags, and optimising images, all 200 pages are indexed within a month, and organic traffic doubles.
