Legacy API Bridges

Connect legacy systems to modern APIs without rewriting the original. Middleware layers, data transformation, and integration bridges for old software.

Sometimes you do not need to replace the legacy system. You just need it to talk to everything else.

Legacy systems were built before APIs became the standard way software communicates. They store data in proprietary formats, use protocols that modern platforms do not support, and were never designed to share information with anything outside their own walls. An API bridge sits between the legacy system and the modern world, translating data and requests so both sides work without either needing to change.

The Reality

Most businesses do not have the luxury of replacing a legacy system on their preferred timeline. The system works, it holds years of data, and the team knows how to use it. The problem is isolation. The legacy system has no connection to the CRM, the email platform, the accounting software, or any of the other tools the business has adopted since it was built.

The usual response is manual data transfer. Someone exports a CSV from the legacy system, reformats it, and imports it into the modern tool. Or they re-key the data manually. This works at low volumes but creates a growing bottleneck and a persistent source of errors as the business scales. An API bridge eliminates this manual step permanently.

The Risks of Doing Nothing

  • Data inconsistency between systems increases as manual transfers fall behind or introduce errors
  • Staff time spent on data entry and reconciliation that could be automated entirely
  • Decision-making slowed because the information needed is split across systems that do not share data
  • Integration opportunities missed because modern platforms assume API connectivity that the legacy system cannot provide

How We Approach This

We build middleware that sits between the legacy system and the modern platforms it needs to connect to. The bridge reads data from the legacy system (through its database, file exports, or whatever access method is available), transforms it into the format the modern API expects, and sends it. It works in reverse too, accepting data from modern systems and writing it back to the legacy database in the format it expects.

The critical principle is that the legacy system does not change. We do not modify its codebase, its database schema, or its behaviour. The bridge is a separate layer that observes and translates. This means there is no risk of breaking the legacy system, and no need to involve the original developer or vendor.

We build bridges using Laravel, which handles API communication, data transformation, scheduling, and error handling cleanly. A typical bridge runs on a schedule (syncing data every few minutes or hours depending on the use case) or responds to events in real time when the integration requires it.

What You End Up With

  • Automated data flow between your legacy system and modern platforms, eliminating manual exports and re-keying
  • A translation layer that maps legacy data formats to modern API structures without altering either system
  • Error handling and logging so you know when a sync fails and can diagnose the problem quickly
  • A foundation for modernisation. Once the bridge is in place, you can replace the legacy system at your own pace because the modern systems are already integrated with the data.
  • Reduced operational risk from manual data handling errors

What We Have Seen

We have built bridges for businesses connecting legacy inventory systems to Shopify, old CRM databases to modern email marketing platforms, and bespoke accounting tools to Xero. In each case, the bridge eliminated hours of weekly manual work and reduced the data errors that were causing downstream problems. One client was able to defer a full system replacement by two years because the bridge gave them the integrations they needed without the cost and disruption of a rebuild.

Connect What You Have

If your legacy system is creating data silos, we can bridge the gap without touching the original. Get in touch to discuss what integrations would make the biggest difference.
