What Is Stripe

Stripe is a payment processing platform that lets businesses accept payments online and manage billing. Plain-English definition for business owners.

Definition

Stripe is an online payment processing platform that allows businesses to accept payments over the internet. It provides the infrastructure for handling credit and debit card transactions, direct debits, digital wallet payments, and recurring subscriptions. Developers integrate Stripe into websites and applications using its API, and Stripe handles the complex, regulated parts: secure card processing, PCI compliance, currency conversion, and routing funds to your bank account. It also offers tools for invoicing, billing, fraud detection, and financial reporting.

Why It Matters

Accepting payments online requires navigating a web of security regulations, card network rules, and banking relationships that most businesses have neither the expertise nor the desire to manage themselves. Stripe abstracts all of that complexity into a developer-friendly service. For business owners, this means you can start accepting payments relatively quickly without building or managing payment infrastructure. Stripe’s subscription billing tools are particularly valuable for recurring-revenue businesses (memberships, retainers, SaaS products) because they handle plan management, proration, failed payment retries, and invoice generation automatically. The platform scales from a single-product checkout to a complex multi-currency billing system without requiring a platform change.

Example

A digital agency launches a subscription product for its clients. Using Stripe, the agency sets up monthly and annual plans with automatic billing. When a client subscribes, Stripe processes the initial payment, stores the card details securely, and charges the client automatically each billing cycle. If a payment fails, Stripe retries it on a schedule before notifying the agency. The agency’s dashboard shows revenue, churn rate, and active subscriber counts without building any of that reporting infrastructure in-house. More definitions are available in the glossary.
