What Is Uptime

Uptime is the percentage of time your website or service is available and working. Learn what uptime means and why it matters for your business.

Definition

Uptime is the percentage of time a website, server, or service is operational and accessible. It is typically expressed as a percentage over a given period: 99.9% uptime over a year, for example, means the service was unavailable for roughly eight hours and forty-five minutes across the entire year. Hosting providers and service-level agreements (SLAs) use uptime guarantees to set expectations about reliability. The opposite of uptime is downtime, which is any period when the system is unreachable or non-functional.

Why It Matters

Every minute your website is down, you are potentially losing customers, revenue, and credibility. For e-commerce businesses, downtime during peak hours can mean thousands of pounds in lost sales. For service businesses, an unreachable website during a marketing push wastes the advertising spend driving traffic to it. Uptime is also a trust signal. If clients or customers visit your site and find it down, they question your professionalism and reliability. Understanding the real-world impact of uptime percentages helps you make informed decisions about hosting and infrastructure investment.

Example

A B2B software company promises clients access to a dashboard around the clock. Their hosting provider guarantees 99.9% uptime. Over the course of a year, the dashboard experiences two brief outages totalling six hours. While that falls within the 99.9% guarantee, the company receives complaints from clients who happened to need access during those windows. They upgrade to a provider offering 99.99% uptime with redundant infrastructure, reducing expected annual downtime to under an hour. Disaster recovery planning often sits alongside these decisions, covering what happens when an outage does occur.
