Business Advisory

Custom software for advisory and virtual-FD firms: reporting and forecasting dashboards, data pipelines from client ledgers, and client portals.

The Landscape

A business advisory firm sells judgement, and that judgement runs on data it does not own. A virtual-FD or management-accounting practice advising owner-managed businesses works from each client’s ledger in Xero, QuickBooks, or Sage, pulls it into an analytics and forecasting tool like Fathom, Spotlight Reporting, or Futrli, and turns the output into a board pack, a three-way forecast, or a monthly management report. Those tools only see the ledger. The parts of a client’s story that live in a CRM, a stock system, or a payroll run get stitched in by hand.

That stitching is where the month goes. An adviser who should be interpreting the numbers instead spends the first week of every cycle exporting, reformatting, and reconciling them, and the more clients the firm takes on, the worse the ratio gets.

Common Challenges

  • Client data pulled from Xero, QuickBooks, or Sage plus operational systems the reporting tool never reaches, so the full picture is reassembled by hand each month
  • Board packs and management reports rebuilt every cycle by exporting from Fathom or Futrli and reformatting in spreadsheets and slides
  • Forecasts and scenario models living in one person’s workbook that nobody else can safely open or edit
  • Each client on a slightly different chart of accounts, so a KPI means one thing for this client and something else for the next, with no consistent mapping
  • Advisory deliverables sent as PDF attachments, with no place a client logs in to see their current numbers, latest forecast, and agreed actions
  • Benchmarking across the client base out of reach because every client’s figures sit in a separate silo

What We Build for Business Advisers

An advisory firm’s reporting is only as good as the data that reaches it. The chart is the fast part. Getting each client’s numbers into it, clean and current, is the slow one, and that is the work we take on. We build the pipelines that pull from each client’s ledger and the operational systems around it into one decision-ready view, so the numbers an adviser presents come together automatically instead of being keyed and reconciled by hand. On top of that we build the dashboards that carry them: KPI, cash, and scenario views a firm can put in front of a client board, refreshed on a schedule rather than rebuilt from scratch.

Where a firm produces the same report for many clients, we build the reporting systems that generate it consistently against a shared chart-of-accounts mapping, and a reporting dashboard that lets a client log in to their own current figures and forecast between meetings, so advisory output stops being a monthly PDF and becomes a live view.

We hold a firm line on scope. We build the systems; the advice stays with you. The assumptions inside a forecast, the strategy behind a scenario, the recommendation an adviser takes to a client board, all of that is your firm’s expertise and none of it is ours. What we take away is the manual assembly between the client’s systems and the board-ready numbers you interpret.

How We Work With Advisory Firms

An advisory firm holds the financials of every business it serves, so data security is not something we bolt on at the end. We work with per-client access controls, a clear record of who can see which data, and pipelines that read from systems you already trust. A project usually starts with the one report or reconciliation eating the most time, proves itself there, then widens across the client base once the mapping is settled.

We are not the right team for a firm that is happy with Fathom or Spotlight straight out of the box. If the standard tool already produces what your clients need, keep it. We come in where those tools stop and the manual work starts, which is the same ground we cover for professional services firms and across the wider finance sector on the industries overview. And if you are a newly-registered practice rather than a scaled one, our free Business Advisory Launch Programme walks you through the first ninety days.

Talk to Us About Your Firm

If your advisers spend more of the month assembling numbers than advising on them, that gap is what we close. Get in touch to talk through the one report costing you the most, and what building it properly would look like.
