Connect Claude to Slack

Bring Claude into Slack as a workspace assistant — long-context reasoning, summarisation, and document Q&A grounded in your team's actual content.

What This Integration Does

This integration brings Anthropic’s Claude into Slack as a workspace assistant that handles long-context reasoning, document summarisation, channel digests, and grounded question-answering against the team’s actual content. Claude is well suited to long documents and structured reasoning, and this integration puts that capability in the channel where the team works.

Unlike a generic chatbot, this integration is built to operate with specific permissions, named knowledge sources, and configurable behaviour per channel — so the assistant is useful where it should be and quiet where it should not be.

The Workflow

Users mention the assistant in a channel or DM to ask a question. The integration sends the message to Claude along with controlled context — the recent thread, designated knowledge sources, and any uploaded files — and posts the answer back in Slack with cited sources. For long-document use cases, a file can be dropped into the conversation and Claude summarises or extracts against the full document in a single response, taking advantage of its long context window.

A specific chain: a legal operations team uses Slack to discuss contracts. A contract PDF is shared into the #contracts channel and the assistant is mentioned with a question — “What is the auto-renewal clause and termination notice period?” The integration reads the file, sends it to Claude along with the question, and posts back a structured answer with the exact clause numbers cited and the relevant text quoted in the thread. The team reads the answer in the channel without anyone leaving Slack to open the document.

Channel digests are another use. The integration runs a scheduled job each morning that takes the previous day’s activity in selected channels, runs a Claude summarisation, and posts a digest in the #leadership channel with key decisions, open questions, and any items that need attention. The digest is grounded in the actual messages, not a hallucinated summary, with quoted excerpts where relevant.

Before and After

Before, the team has access to Claude via the Anthropic interface but switching between Slack and Claude breaks flow. Long documents get skimmed or not read. Channel activity goes unsummarised. The AI is useful but underused because of the friction.

After, the assistant is in Slack where the team already is. Long documents get answered against. Channels get summarised on a schedule. The capability is used because the friction is gone.

Who Needs This

Knowledge-intensive teams — legal operations, professional services, consulting, research, and product — where long documents, structured reasoning, and grounded answers matter. The integration is worth building once the team has decided Claude is the right model for their work and Slack is the right venue.

How We Build This

We build this against the Anthropic API and the Slack Web API. Claude’s long context window enables single-shot document processing for files up to several hundred pages. Permission handling, knowledge source configuration, channel-specific behaviour, and cost tracking are all configured per workspace. See Slack API Integration for the Slack capabilities involved.

Get Claude and Slack Connected

If Claude is your model of choice and Slack is your workspace, we can build a custom integration that brings the two together with the right guardrails and the right context.
