What This Integration Does
This integration posts Google Drive activity into Slack channels with per-folder mapping, rich file previews, and selective filtering so each team sees the files that matter to them. New files, comments, suggestions on Docs, and shared-link activity all post into the right channel with formatting that respects file type.
For organisations standardised on Google Workspace for files and Slack for coordination, this is the connection that gets the right file into the right channel at the right moment.
The Workflow
When a new file is added to a watched Drive folder, the integration receives the change, identifies the configured Slack channel for that folder, and posts a message with a rich preview — file name, type, owner, a thumbnail or content preview where applicable, and a direct link. Comments on Docs post into the same thread so the conversation about a file lives next to the file in Slack.
A specific chain: a content team uses a “Editorial Drafts” Drive folder for in-progress articles. A writer drops a new draft into the folder; the integration posts to the #editorial channel with the draft title, the writer’s name, and a preview of the first paragraph. The editor reviews and leaves a comment in the Doc; the integration posts the comment into the same thread tagging the writer. The writer replies in Slack; the integration writes the reply back as a Doc comment. When the editor moves the file to an “Approved” folder, a confirmation posts in the thread.
Shared-link activity surfaces too. When a Drive file from a designated folder is shared with an external email address, the integration posts to a “data-watch” channel with the file name, the recipient, and the access level — useful for compliance-sensitive teams who want visibility on what is being shared externally.
Before and After
Before, files arrive in Drive folders and nobody knows until someone opens the folder. Doc comments fire email notifications that get buried. External shares happen without team-wide visibility.
After, each watched folder has its own Slack channel where new files post with previews. Comments fire in the channel where the team works. External shares are surfaced for the right oversight. The team works in Drive for files and in Slack for coordination, and the two stay in step.
Who Needs This
Content teams, design teams, legal operations, and any function that runs on shared Drive folders and coordinates in Slack. Particularly valuable for teams where the volume of new files is high enough that monitoring Drive directly is not realistic.
How We Build This
We build this against the Google Drive API and the Slack Web API. Drive uses push notifications via the Changes endpoint for watched files and folders; the integration filters events, fetches rich metadata, and posts formatted messages. Doc comments are read through the Drive Activity API. See Google Workspace API Integration and Slack API Integration for the underlying capabilities.
Get Google Drive and Slack Connected
If your team works on shared Drive folders and coordinates in Slack, we can build a custom integration that posts the right file activity to the right channel with rich previews.
