What This Integration Does
This integration routes Linear issue activity into Slack with per-team channel mapping, cycle progress digests, and triage alerts designed for how engineering teams actually work. Issue creation, status changes, comments, project milestones, and cycle events all post into Slack in a format that respects the speed and density of engineering work.
For teams who picked Linear for its speed and Slack for its coordination, this connection keeps the two from drifting apart.
The Workflow
When a Linear issue is created in a team, the integration posts to that team’s configured channel with the issue title, priority, assignee, and project. Status changes (“In Progress,” “In Review,” “Done”) update the original message in-place via threaded replies rather than spamming new messages. Comments on an issue post into the thread so the conversation stays attached.
A specific chain: an engineering team running two-week cycles in Linear. At cycle start, the integration posts a cycle kickoff message in the #engineering channel listing the issues in scope, their priorities, and their owners. Halfway through the cycle, a midpoint digest posts with progress: percentage of issues moved to Done, percentage still in Backlog, percentage in Review. If the cycle is trending more than 20 percent behind, the integration posts a risk alert tagging the engineering lead. At cycle end, a closing message posts with what was delivered, what carried over, and the cycle velocity compared to the rolling average.
Triage routing is the other heavy lift. New issues created with no assignee land in a triage channel where the engineering lead can react with an emoji to claim or assign. The integration listens for those reactions and updates the Linear issue accordingly, so triage happens in Slack without leaving Linear out of sync.
Before and After
Before, Linear is fast but invisible to non-engineers. Product managers and customer success teams check Linear by hand to see what is shipping. Cycle progress is reported manually in standups. Triage happens in Linear with no Slack visibility, slowing response on customer-reported issues.
After, the engineering channel reflects Linear in near real time. Cycle progress is automatic. Triage happens in Slack with reaction-based actions. Non-engineering teams see what is shipping without disturbing the engineering team to ask.
Who Needs This
Engineering teams that picked Linear over Jira for speed and run product cycles or sprints with active stakeholder visibility. Common in B2B SaaS, fintech, and any product-led organisation where engineering and the rest of the business need to coordinate closely.
How We Build This
We build this against the Linear GraphQL API and the Slack API Integration. Linear’s GraphQL subscriptions and webhooks deliver events fast; the integration filters by team, project, and configured rules. Reaction-based actions in Slack are read through the Slack Events API and translated into Linear mutations.
Get Linear and Slack Connected
If Linear is your engineering system and Slack is your coordination layer, we can build a custom integration that gets the right Linear activity into the right channel at the right detail. See Connect Jira to Slack and Connect ClickUp to Slack for related integrations, or browse the integrations overview.
