What This Integration Does

This integration connects Shopify to Klaviyo through a custom API layer that goes beyond Klaviyo’s native Shopify connector, syncing custom data points, non-standard events, and business-specific metrics that the out-of-the-box integration does not support. It gives your email marketing the depth of data it needs to move from generic campaigns to genuinely personalised, revenue-driving automation. It sits within our wider set of e-commerce and CRM integrations, built as custom API work rather than off-the-shelf connectors.

Klaviyo’s native Shopify integration handles the basics well: standard order events, product catalogue sync, and basic customer profiles. But businesses with more complex setups quickly hit its limits. Custom product metadata, subscription events from third-party plugins, loyalty programme tiers, wholesale pricing tiers, B2B account flags, and multi-store rollups all fall outside what the native connector provides. This custom integration fills those gaps.

The result is a Klaviyo account that knows everything relevant about each customer. Not just what the standard connector exposes, but the specific data points that make your segmentation and automation strategies possible. When your flows reference a customer’s loyalty tier, their subscription renewal date, or their wholesale discount level, that data is there because the integration put it there.

The Workflow

The integration operates alongside Klaviyo’s native connector rather than replacing it. The native connector handles standard e-commerce events. The custom layer adds everything else.

Shopify webhooks deliver events to your Laravel backend in real time. The backend processes these events, enriches them with data from other sources (loyalty programme status from a third-party app, subscription data from a billing plugin, custom metafields on product or customer records), and pushes the enriched payload to Klaviyo’s Track and Identify APIs. The mechanics of registering and reading those Shopify events are covered in our Shopify API integration work.

Custom events are defined based on your specific business logic. A “Subscription Renewed” event carries the plan name, renewal count, and next billing date. A “Loyalty Tier Changed” event includes the old tier, new tier, and qualifying spend. A “Wholesale Order Placed” event flags the customer as a trade account and includes the discount tier applied. These events become triggers for Klaviyo flows that the native integration could never power.

Profile properties in Klaviyo are updated with each event. Beyond the standard fields, the integration maintains custom properties such as preferred product category based on purchase frequency analysis, customer acquisition channel pulled from UTM data stored in Shopify, account type (retail, wholesale, staff), and predictive reorder date calculated from order intervals.

A scheduled job runs every six hours, recalculating aggregate properties and pushing updated profiles to Klaviyo in batches. This catches any drift between the two systems and ensures that slow-changing properties like lifetime value percentile and category affinity scores stay current.

Before and After

Before: Klaviyo receives standard Shopify events through the native connector. Segmentation is limited to basic purchase data, such as bought product X, spent more than Y, last ordered Z days ago. Flows cannot reference subscription status, loyalty tiers, or custom product attributes because that data never reaches Klaviyo. The marketing team knows richer automation is possible but cannot build it with the data available.

After: Klaviyo profiles carry every data point that matters to your marketing strategy. Flows trigger on business-specific events like subscription renewals, loyalty tier upgrades, and back-in-stock notifications for watched products. Segments reference custom properties that reflect how your business actually categorises customers. Campaign personalisation uses product metadata that the native connector ignores, like material, colour family, or compatibility tags.

Who Needs This

This integration is for Shopify merchants who have outgrown Klaviyo’s native connector. If you are already using both platforms and your marketing team is constrained by the data available in Klaviyo, wanting to segment or trigger flows based on information that exists in Shopify but does not sync natively, this is the solution.

Typical scenarios include stores with subscription products managed through a Shopify plugin, brands with loyalty or rewards programmes whose tier data needs to drive email personalisation, B2B stores with wholesale pricing that need trade-specific email flows, and multi-store operations that need customer data consolidated into a single Klaviyo account.

If your Klaviyo flows are simpler than your business warrants because the data is not there to power anything more sophisticated, this integration removes that ceiling.

How We Build This

We begin by mapping the data gap, comparing what Klaviyo currently receives through its native connector against what your marketing team needs for their segmentation and automation strategy. This produces a specification of custom events, profile properties, and catalogue metadata that the integration will deliver.

The integration is built as a service within your Laravel backend. Shopify webhooks are registered through the Admin API, and each event type routes to a handler that enriches the payload before forwarding it to Klaviyo. Enrichment may involve querying Shopify metafields, checking subscription status through a plugin’s API, or calculating derived values like category affinity.

Klaviyo’s Track API receives custom events with structured properties, and the Identify API updates profile properties. Both are called through a rate-limited queue to stay within Klaviyo’s API thresholds during high-traffic periods like sales events. The full surface of what those endpoints can carry is set out in our Klaviyo API integration work.

We configure Klaviyo’s event and property schema to match the integration’s output, set up initial segments and flow triggers using the new data, and run a historical backfill to populate existing profiles with calculated properties. Testing covers event delivery, property accuracy, and flow triggering under realistic conditions.

Ready to Connect Shopify and Klaviyo?

Your email automation is only as good as the data behind it. If Klaviyo’s native connector is holding back your segmentation and personalisation strategy, we will build the custom layer that gives your marketing team the data they actually need. If your store runs on WooCommerce instead, the same approach drives our WooCommerce and Klaviyo integration.
