Integration

What This Integration Does

This integration connects your WordPress site to Mailchimp’s Marketing API so that every signup, registration, or form submission adds the person to the right Mailchimp audience with the correct tags, merge fields, and segment assignments. It replaces embedded Mailchimp signup forms and plugin-based connectors with a server-side API integration that gives you full control over how subscribers enter your email lists.

Standard Mailchimp embeds and WordPress plugins handle the basics: name and email into a single audience. But if you need different form types to apply different tags, or you want merge fields populated from conditional form data, or you need double opt-in handled selectively based on the signup context, the native tools fall short. This integration handles all of that at the API level.

The connection works in one direction: WordPress sends subscriber data to Mailchimp. It does not pull data back from Mailchimp into WordPress, which keeps the integration simple and the data flow predictable. This sits within our Lead Capture Integrations range. If Klaviyo is your email platform rather than Mailchimp, the WordPress and Klaviyo Integration covers that pairing.

The Workflow

A visitor completes a form on your WordPress site: a newsletter signup, a gated content download, an event registration, or a general enquiry where they have opted into marketing communications. The form submission triggers a server-side call to Mailchimp’s Members API endpoint for the relevant audience.

The integration determines which audience to target based on the form type. A newsletter signup goes to your primary marketing audience. An event registration might go to a separate audience or the same audience with a specific tag. Each form has its own mapping configuration that defines the target audience, the tags to apply, and which form fields map to which Mailchimp merge fields.

If the subscriber already exists in the audience, their merge fields and tags are updated rather than creating a duplicate. The integration respects Mailchimp’s subscription status and will not resubscribe someone who has previously unsubscribed unless explicitly configured to do so, which protects your compliance posture.

For forms where double opt-in is required, the integration sets the subscriber status to pending, which triggers Mailchimp’s confirmation email. For internal signups or transactional contexts, the status can be set to subscribed directly.

Before and After

Before: Your WordPress site has an embedded Mailchimp form in the footer that captures email addresses into a single audience with no tags or segmentation. Other forms on the site (quote requests, download forms, event registrations) do not feed into Mailchimp at all. Your email list grows slowly and everyone on it receives the same campaigns regardless of how they found you.

After: Every form on your site that involves an email address can optionally feed into Mailchimp with the appropriate tags and merge field data. A visitor who downloads a pricing guide is tagged differently from one who signs up for a newsletter. Your Mailchimp segments reflect the actual interests and intent of your subscribers, so you can send targeted campaigns that perform better and generate fewer unsubscribes.

Who Needs This

This integration is for businesses that use WordPress for their website and Mailchimp for email marketing, and need more control over how subscribers enter their lists. It fits particularly well if:

  • You have multiple form types on your WordPress site and need each to tag or segment subscribers differently in Mailchimp
  • You use Mailchimp merge fields for personalisation (industry, company name, service interest) and need those populated from form data
  • You want to control double opt-in behaviour per form type rather than applying a blanket setting
  • You have tried Mailchimp’s WordPress plugin and found the tag and merge field support too limited
  • You are building landing pages in WordPress and need each page’s signups routed to specific Mailchimp audiences or segments

How We Build This

We start by mapping your WordPress forms to your Mailchimp audience structure. For each form, we define the target audience, the tags to apply, the merge fields to populate, and the opt-in behaviour. If your Mailchimp account needs new merge fields or tags to support the mapping, we set those up as part of the build.

The integration uses Mailchimp’s Marketing API v3 with API key authentication. Subscriber creation and updates use the PUT method on the Members endpoint, which handles both new subscribers and existing record updates in a single call using the email address hash as the identifier. This eliminates the duplicate creation problem that plagues plugin-based approaches.

Tags are applied through the Tags endpoint after the member record is confirmed. Batch operations are available for bulk imports if you have existing form submission data that needs backfilling into Mailchimp.

We test across every form type, verifying that subscribers land in the correct audience with the right tags and merge fields. We confirm that existing subscribers are updated rather than duplicated, and that unsubscribed contacts are handled according to your compliance requirements. For teams also managing marketing automation through HubSpot, the HubSpot and Mailchimp Integration handles that connection. The API Integrations service page covers how we scope and deliver these projects.

Start Building Targeted Email Lists From Day One

If your WordPress signups are landing in Mailchimp without context, you are sending generic campaigns to an undifferentiated list. We build the integration that turns every form submission into a properly tagged, properly segmented subscriber.
