What Is Generative AI

Generative AI creates new content like text, images, and code from a prompt. Plain-English definition for business owners.

Definition

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content (text, images, audio, video, or code) based on patterns it has learned from large amounts of existing data. Rather than simply analysing or categorising information, generative AI produces original outputs in response to a prompt or instruction. Tools like ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Claude are all examples. You give them a description of what you want, and they generate something new that matches your request.

Why It Matters

Generative AI has moved from a novelty to a practical business tool faster than most predicted. It can draft marketing copy, summarise documents, write first-pass code, create product images, and handle customer enquiries: tasks that previously required either a specialist or significant time from your team. For business owners, the value is speed and scale. A task that took a copywriter two hours can have a solid first draft in seconds. That does not replace expertise, but it does mean your experts spend their time refining and improving rather than starting from a blank page. Understanding what generative AI can and cannot do helps you invest wisely and avoid overpromising vendors. For context on where it sits alongside other forms of automation, see what is robotic process automation and the glossary index.

Example

A property management company needs to write unique listing descriptions for forty new rental properties. Instead of a staff member drafting each one from scratch, they feed the property details (bedrooms, location, features) into a generative AI tool. It produces a polished description for each property in seconds. A team member reviews and adjusts the tone, but the bulk of the writing work is done, saving an entire day of effort. Many of these tools are accessed through an API, which means they can be embedded directly into your own systems and workflows.
