Why It Matters
Meta tags are your first impression in search results. Before anyone visits your website, they see your meta title and meta description in Google. If those are vague, missing, or auto-generated, you lose clicks to competitors who wrote theirs deliberately. Meta tags also affect SEO directly: the meta title is one of the strongest on-page ranking signals. Beyond search, Open Graph meta tags control how your pages look when shared on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter. Getting meta tags right is a small effort with outsized impact on both visibility and click-through rate.
Example
A recruitment agency has fifty job listing pages, but none have custom meta titles or descriptions. Google auto-generates titles from the page content, which often results in truncated or irrelevant text in search results. After writing unique, keyword-focused meta titles and descriptions for each page, their average CTR from search results increases by thirty per cent within two months.
The meta title is the single most impactful tag to get right, and it connects closely to on-page SEO more broadly. Both are covered in the glossary.
