What Is SEO

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the practice of improving your website so it ranks higher in search results. Learn what SEO involves and why it matters.

Definition

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It is the practice of improving your website so it appears higher in search engine results for terms your potential customers are searching for. It covers everything from the words on your pages and the structure of your site to how fast it loads and how many other websites link to it. The goal is to earn more of the right traffic without paying for ads.

Why It Matters

When someone searches for a product or service you offer, you want your website to appear near the top. Most clicks go to the first few results on the page. If your site is buried on page two or three, most people will never find it. SEO is how you earn that visibility over time. Unlike paid advertising, the traffic you gain through SEO does not disappear the moment you stop spending. A well-optimised page can bring in visitors for months or years. The catch is that SEO is not instant. It requires consistent effort, quality content, and technical attention. But for most businesses, it is the highest-return marketing investment they can make. On-page SEO is one of the core components, covering what you put on each page and how you structure it. You can also explore Performance and SEO resources for more on how site speed and technical factors feed into rankings.

Example

A plumbing company in Leeds creates a page specifically about emergency boiler repairs, written around the phrases local homeowners actually search for. They make sure the page loads quickly, is easy to read on a phone, and includes their service area. Over the following months, Google recognises the page as a useful answer to those searches and it rises into the top three results, delivering a steady stream of enquiries without a penny spent on ads.
