The Clyde that once launched a quarter of the world’s ships now assembles Type 26 frigates under the new 170-metre Janet Harvey Hall at BAE’s Govan yard, opened in 2025. The same lineage runs out to AMIDS, the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District by Glasgow Airport, where the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland and CPI’s Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre now anchor a wholly modern kind of factory. The heritage reorganised rather than retired. What changed on the shop floor did not change in the office. The works orders, routings and machine time live in one system; the ledger and the certificate file live in others; and on most Clydeside engineering firms those records were never wired to each other. The reborn industry runs on a connecting layer it does not yet have.
The Supply Chain, Not the Prime, Is Who Searches for a Developer
BAE at Govan and Scotstoun, Rolls-Royce and Boeing at Inchinnan, Thermo Fisher and Terumo Aortic at Westway: the primes and the multinationals run their own engineering and their own IT, so they are not who this page is for. They are proof the cluster is alive and hungry for capacity. The firms that actually search for a software developer are the ones feeding them: the subcontract machinists, fabricators and finishers running ten to a hundred and fifty staff out of Hillington Park and the wider Clydeside base. Firms like Preston Components in Hillington, turning one-offs through to volume runs on conventional and CNC machines, and J.G.B Steelcraft on Carlyle Avenue, an established sub-contract fabricator cutting by laser, plasma and water-jet since 1977. These are operationally complex businesses with no developer on the payroll. Scottish Engineering, the 550-plus-member industry body at 105 West George Street, has represented this supply base since 1865 precisely because the operational load sits with the subcontractor, not the prime.
The Certification Gate the Clyde’s Defence Work Now Demands
The distinctive pressure in Glasgow manufacturing is the gate a Clydeside shop has to pass to get on the work in the first place. Type 26 alone is a £1.2bn UK sub-contract spend across more than 120 suppliers. A defence prime wants a vetted supplier, not just a good part. JOSCAR, the Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register operated by Hellios and used by BAE Systems, Leonardo and Rolls-Royce, is the single repository they check: a supplier’s quality system, financial stability, data protection and conformance evidence, all kept current. Sitting under it is the day-to-day proof: AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality records, batch and serial traceability, and the heat numbers, operation history and inspection results a tier-one customer expects to trace on any finished part.
Both 123insight and Sage 200 Manufacturing, the systems most of these shops run, carry batch and serial traceability through to a full build. The problem is what happens outside the works order: the certificates, the conformance packs and the accreditation evidence still tend to live in spreadsheets and shared folders, kept apart from the job they belong to. That is an exposure, not just a chore. A JOSCAR refresh or a customer audit becomes a scramble to reassemble records by hand, and a slow answer to “trace this part” is the kind that loses the next contract. Keep the certificate attached to the live works order and it becomes a by-product of the job rather than a reconstruction after it.
Medicines Manufacturing Raises the Same Problem Under GMP
The AMIDS arrivals push the same join in a sharper direction. The Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre works in a Good Manufacturing Practice environment, where small-molecule medicines and drug products are made, and increasingly released in real time, under a regime that treats the batch record as the product. For the analytical, packaging and engineering SMEs that grow up around that work, GMP is uncompromising about exactly what the defence chain implies: every batch must carry a complete, verifiable history, and a record that drifts from what physically happened is a release failure, not a typo. Whether the customer is a frigate programme or a drug substance, the operational demand converges.
