The stretch of the M4 between Junctions 10 and 12 is one of the densest distribution corridors in the South of England, and the goods moving through it are tracked far better than the data describing them. Worton Grange, on the A33 beside Junction 11, and Theale Logistics Park, adjacent to Junction 12 and 31 miles from Heathrow, sit at the centre of it: a belt of warehousing, fulfilment and haulage that exists precisely because Reading is close to everything. A pallet leaving Theale has a barcode, a route and a delivery window. What it usually does not have is a single system that can tell the client where it is, when it arrived, and whether it has been invoiced. Someone has to pull figures out of four places to find out.
That is the real shape of demand when an operations or warehouse manager along this corridor searches for software development in Reading. They are not trying to build a product. They are running a data-poor supply chain, where the figures that describe the work live in five systems that do not talk to each other, and they want someone to wire those systems together.
The M4 Corridor Runs on Supply Chains That Can’t See Themselves
The headline occupiers here are easy to name and the wrong ones to sell to. DHL, Yodel and Volvo at Worton Grange, and Amazon Logistics at its Theale distribution centre, are national operations with their own enterprise IT and engineering teams. They build their own systems and will never be our clients.
The firms that feel the data problem are the ones threaded through the same estates: the independent and family-owned 3PLs, the multi-client fulfilment houses, the regional hauliers and the trade and builders’ suppliers. Walker Logistics is the archetype: a Berkshire 3PL established in 1999, now running more than 250,000 sq ft of ambient warehousing plus a new 135,000 sq ft facility, handling e-commerce order processing, multi-channel and B2B retail fulfilment, reverse logistics and post-Brexit EU fulfilment. Operations at that scale and complexity, and no in-house development team. That combination (heavy operational process, no engineers, no intention of hiring any) is exactly the buyer this corridor produces in volume.
What an Independent 3PL Actually Runs On — and Where It Splits
The systems are individually capable. The problem is that they were never designed to be one system.
- The warehouse management system (Mintsoft, Peoplevox now part of Körber, or Helm formerly Despatch Cloud) knows the stock and the orders, but only inside its own walls.
- The transport and telematics layer (Mandata or Microlise) knows the vehicle, the route and the electronic proof of delivery, but holds them apart from billing.
- The accounting platform (Xero, Sage or QuickBooks) is where client invoices, rate cards and reconciliations actually have to land, and almost nothing feeds it automatically.
- The e-commerce channels each client trades on add a fifth source of truth, and a sixth, and a seventh.
The result is the failure mode the sector documents openly: spreadsheets for client billing, email threads for order confirmations, and a manual reconciliation every cycle. Stock and order data is fragmented across the WMS, the TMS, the sales channels and a stack of spreadsheets, so there is no single source of truth. Reporting is stitched together by hand, and small errors compound into disputes. For an independent operator competing on service against carriers that have already automated all of this, that manual joining is the drag they can least afford.
From Proof of Delivery to Invoice: Closing the Manual Gaps
The most expensive single gap on this corridor is the one between delivery and billing. A driver captures proof of delivery in Mandata or Microlise (a signature, a timestamp, a photo) and that record then has to be carried, by a person, into the accounting system and often into the client’s own platform before anyone gets paid. POD chasing, billing queries and disputes all live in that handover.

- Repeatable client onboarding so each new e-commerce or 3PL client connects to their store or ERP through a maintained integration pattern, rather than a fresh, fragile, bespoke join every time.
- Exception alerts, route and KPI reporting: the workflow systems an independent operator needs but has no developer to build, delivered as custom software around the tools already in place.
We are not a fit for a firm that wants to rip out its WMS and start again; the value here is almost always in connecting what works, not replacing it.
Giving Your Clients the Real-Time Portal the Carriers Already Have
The reason a 3PL’s operations team turns into a manual reporting desk is that its clients have nowhere to look. Customers email and phone for stock levels, order status and delivery confirmation because the WMS has no live client-facing portal, so every enquiry becomes a person checking a screen and typing a reply. The big carriers solved this years ago; their clients self-serve. The independent operator next to them on the same estate cannot, and it shows.
A bespoke client portal, built on the APIs of the systems already running, closes that gap directly: the client sees their own live stock, orders and proof of delivery, and the operations team gets its hours back. For a firm whose service is its only real edge over the carriers, that is the gap most worth fixing first. Most clients we work with continue past that first integration, because once two systems are talking the next gap is obvious.
