How We Work

How Digital Royalty engagements run day to day -- communication, decision-making, retainers, and what to expect as a client.

Direct Communication, Fast Decisions, No Overhead

This is how the day-to-day working relationship with Digital Royalty operates: the communication, the engagement structure, and what to expect as a client. For how we deliver projects (discovery, iteration, handover), see Our Process.

You talk directly to the people building your system. There are no account managers relaying messages, no weekly status meetings that could have been an email, and no waiting days for a response to a simple question. Decisions happen in hours, not weeks.

Communication

Every client gets a dedicated channel (typically Slack or a shared workspace) where you can reach us directly during working hours. Questions get answered the same day. Decisions that need input are surfaced as they come up, not batched into a weekly call.

We do use scheduled check-ins where they make sense, but they are short and focused:

  • Quick syncs during active development: 15 minutes, as needed, not ceremonial
  • Demo sessions at the end of each build cycle: you see what was built and flag what needs changing
  • Planning conversations before each new phase: scope, priorities, and timeline for the next cycle

There is no standing one-hour weekly meeting unless you specifically want one. Most clients find they do not need it because they already have visibility through the channel and the staging environment.

Engagement Models

We work in two ways, depending on what the project needs:

Project engagements are scoped, priced, and delivered as a defined piece of work. Discovery produces a scope document, we agree on timeline and cost, and development runs in iterations until the system is delivered. This is the right model when you have a specific system to build and a clear starting point.

Retainer engagements are an ongoing monthly commitment. You get a set amount of development time each month, used for maintenance, new features, integrations, and system improvements. Retainers work best after a project has shipped and the system needs to evolve with your business. Most of our long-term clients are on retainers. They get predictable cost and priority access without needing to scope every small change as a separate project.

Some engagements start as a project and move to a retainer once the system is live. That is the most common pattern.

How Decisions Get Made

We are opinionated about architecture, but we do not make business decisions for you. The split works like this:

  • We decide: technology choices, system architecture, integration patterns, code structure, deployment approach
  • You decide: priorities, feature scope, business logic, what matters most to your users
  • We decide together: trade-offs between speed and scope, what to build now vs later, when a feature is “done enough” to ship

If we think you are asking for something that will cause problems later (an integration approach that will not scale, a data model that will box you in), we will push back and explain why. You can override us, but you will hear the trade-off first.

What We Need From You

We move fast, but that depends on you being available for decisions. The biggest cause of project delays is not technical complexity. It is waiting for answers. Specifically:

  • A decision-maker with authority: someone who can approve scope changes without convening a committee
  • Timely feedback on demos: within a day or two, not weeks
  • Access to your existing systems: API credentials, admin logins, documentation for tools we need to integrate with

We are flexible on everything else. You do not need to manage us, attend daily standups, or write detailed briefs. A conversation is usually enough.

Where We Are

We are a UK-based team and we work remotely. We are available during UK business hours with flexibility around that for clients in different time zones. All work is done in-house. Nothing is outsourced or subcontracted.

Start a Conversation

If this sounds like the way you prefer to work, get in touch and we will talk through what you need. You can also browse the full range of services or read the Company Overview to understand who we are before we speak. For ongoing maintenance and feature work after a project ships, our support retainers cover that.
