How to Modernise Legacy Systems Safely

A webinar on incremental legacy modernisation -- strategies for updating critical systems without downtime, data loss, or the risk of a full rewrite.

What This Covers

The conventional advice for legacy systems is stark: rewrite it from scratch or live with it. Neither option is honest. Full rewrites are expensive, risky, and routinely run over budget and timeline — sometimes by multiples. But continuing to run a system that is increasingly difficult to maintain, impossible to integrate with modern tools, and understood by fewer people every year is not a sustainable position either. This session covers the third option that rarely gets discussed: incremental modernisation that improves the system progressively without the all-or-nothing gamble.

We walk through real modernisation strategies we have used for businesses running critical systems built five, ten, or fifteen years ago. You will see how to identify which parts of a legacy system to modernise first for maximum impact, how to wrap existing functionality in modern APIs so new tools can connect without touching the core, and how to run old and new systems in parallel during transition periods so the business never depends entirely on either one. We also cover the organisational side — how to build internal support for modernisation when the people who depend on the system are understandably nervous about change.

The session is honest about what incremental modernisation can and cannot achieve. Some systems genuinely need replacement. We help you work out which category yours falls into before you commit to a direction.

Who Should Attend

Business owners and operations leads responsible for systems that are becoming harder to maintain or extend. This is particularly relevant if you are facing any of these situations: a system built by a developer who is no longer available, a platform that the vendor has stopped supporting, a database that has grown beyond what the original architecture can handle, or a process that requires manual workarounds because the software cannot be updated. No technical background is required — the focus is on strategy and risk, not code.

What You Will Learn

  • How to assess a legacy system honestly — which parts are genuinely problematic, which parts are stable and should be left alone, and which parts are worth modernising first
  • The strangler fig pattern and other incremental migration strategies that let you replace system components one at a time while keeping the whole system operational
  • How to expose legacy system data through modern APIs so new tools and integrations can connect without requiring changes to the core system
  • What parallel running looks like in practice — how to operate old and new systems simultaneously during transition, including data synchronisation and rollback planning
  • How to estimate costs and timelines for incremental modernisation versus full replacement, including the hidden costs of doing nothing

Format

A 75-minute live webinar with 20 minutes of Q&A. The session includes a legacy system assessment framework that attendees can apply to their own systems immediately. Available on demand after the live session.
