What Is Organic Traffic

Organic traffic is the visitors who find your website through unpaid search results. Learn why it is valuable and how to grow it.

Definition

Organic traffic is the visitors who arrive at your website by clicking on unpaid search engine results. When someone searches for something on Google, sees your page listed in the results (not in the ads section), and clicks through, that visit counts as organic traffic. It is distinct from paid traffic (ads), direct traffic (typing your URL), referral traffic (links from other sites), and social traffic (links from social media). The results page where those listings appear is called a SERP.

Why It Matters

Organic traffic is widely regarded as the most valuable type of website traffic because of two qualities: intent and sustainability. People who find you through search are actively looking for what you offer. They have typed in a query that matches your content, which means they are already partway toward becoming a customer. And unlike paid traffic, organic visits do not stop when you stop spending. A page that ranks well can deliver consistent traffic for months or years with relatively little ongoing cost. Growing organic traffic requires solid SEO, quality content marketing, and a technically sound website, and it takes time. The long-term return on that investment typically outperforms every other marketing channel.

Example

A B2B software company invests in a series of in-depth guides answering common questions their target customers ask. Within six months, those guides rank on the first page of Google for dozens of relevant queries. Organic traffic grows from three hundred visits a month to two thousand, generating a steady stream of qualified leads without any advertising spend.
