What Is PPC

PPC (pay-per-click) is an advertising model where you pay each time someone clicks your ad. Learn how PPC works and why businesses use it.

Definition

PPC stands for pay-per-click, an online advertising model where you pay a fee each time someone clicks on your ad. Rather than earning visits to your website organically, you are buying them. The most common form is search advertising. These are the sponsored results that appear at the top of Google when someone searches for a term related to your business. You bid on keywords, and if your ad wins the auction, it appears. You only pay when someone actually clicks.

Why It Matters

PPC puts your business in front of people who are actively searching for what you offer, and it does so immediately. Unlike SEO, which builds over months, a PPC campaign can drive traffic the same day it goes live. That speed makes it valuable for launches, promotions, or testing whether a new market has demand. The trade-off is cost: once you stop paying, the traffic stops. A strong digital strategy usually combines PPC for immediate visibility with SEO for long-term, sustainable growth. The key is knowing your numbers. That means tracking what you pay per click, what percentage of clicks convert, and what each conversion is worth to your business. Click-through rate is one of the primary metrics to watch.

Example

A law firm wants to attract clients searching for “employment solicitor Manchester.” They set up a Google Ads campaign targeting that keyword. Their ad appears above the organic results, and they pay around four pounds every time someone clicks through to their site. If one in twenty visitors becomes a paying client worth several thousand pounds, the maths works comfortably in their favour. More definitions are in the glossary.
