What Is a Landing Page

A landing page is a standalone web page designed to drive a single action. Learn why landing pages convert better than general website pages.

Definition

A landing page is a standalone web page built with one specific goal in mind: getting the visitor to take a single action. That action might be filling in a form, booking a call, signing up for a trial, or making a purchase. Unlike a typical website page that offers navigation and multiple options, a landing page strips away distractions and focuses everything on that one conversion. Every element on the page (headline, copy, images, form, button) exists to move the visitor toward that single outcome.

Why It Matters

Sending ad traffic or email campaign clicks to your homepage is one of the most common marketing mistakes. A homepage serves many audiences and many purposes, and it is not optimised for any single conversion. A landing page, by contrast, is purpose-built to match the specific offer, audience, and message of the campaign driving traffic to it. That alignment is why landing pages consistently convert at higher rates than general pages. They also make measurement easier: because there is only one action available, you can see exactly how many visitors convert and calculate your cost per lead or sale with precision.

Example

A SaaS company runs a LinkedIn campaign offering a free e-book on improving team productivity. Instead of linking to their homepage, they send clicks to a dedicated landing page with a headline matching the ad, a brief description of the e-book, three bullet points on what the reader will learn, and a short form asking for a name and email. The page converts at eighteen per cent, far higher than the three per cent their homepage achieves for the same traffic.

Good landing pages pair a clear call to action with copy that mirrors what the visitor was promised before they clicked. Browse the full glossary for more definitions.
