What Is Lead Generation

Lead generation is the process of attracting potential customers and capturing their details. Learn what it involves and why it matters for growth.

Definition

Lead generation is the process of attracting people who might be interested in your product or service and capturing their contact details so you can follow up with them. A "lead" is anyone who has shown some level of interest. They might have filled in a form, downloaded a guide, signed up for a webinar, or requested a quote. The goal is to build a pipeline of potential customers you can nurture towards a sale, rather than waiting passively for enquiries to arrive.

Why It Matters

Most people who visit your website are not ready to buy immediately. If you have no way of capturing their details and staying in touch, they leave and you may never see them again. Lead generation gives you a second chance. It turns anonymous visitors into identifiable contacts you can build a relationship with over time. For B2B businesses especially, where buying decisions can take weeks or months, a steady flow of qualified leads is the foundation of predictable revenue. Without it, growth depends entirely on word of mouth or expensive advertising with no follow-up mechanism.

Two concepts sit at the centre of any working lead generation setup: a compelling lead magnet that gives people a reason to hand over their details, and a clear CTA that tells them what to do next. Both are explained in the glossary.

Example

A commercial cleaning company creates a short online checklist called “Is your office cleaning contract costing you too much?” Visitors answer a few questions and enter their email to receive a personalised report. Each submission is a lead. The company follows up within 24 hours with a phone call, referencing the specific concerns flagged in the checklist. Over three months, 40 percent of those leads convert into site surveys, and a quarter of those become long-term contracts.
