Few precision-engineering firms in the country sit closer to the cutting edge of manufacturing research than the ones in Sheffield and Rotherham, and few are further from acting on it. The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, the University of Sheffield’s network founded with Boeing, works with over 100 industrial members and runs SME engagement teams across South Yorkshire specifically to bring smaller manufacturers up the digital curve. The Industry 4.0 message is not an abstraction here; it is being proven a few miles up the road. Yet inside the unit of the average subcontract machinist or fabricator feeding that supply chain, the shop floor is still largely data-dark. The machines run, the jobs ship, and almost none of what happens on the floor is captured as it happens. That gap, between world-class research on the doorstep and a works manager who still has to walk the floor to know where a job stands, is what sends these firms searching for a developer.

World-Class Research on the Doorstep, a Data-Dark Shop Floor Inside the Unit

The geography makes the gap unusually stark. The Sheffield-Rotherham Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District is a roughly 2,000-acre centre of excellence in metals and materials, spanning the Lower Don Valley and the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley off the M1. The park alone hosts around 100 companies, including Boeing’s first European production factory, the McLaren Composites Technology Centre, Rolls-Royce, the Nuclear AMRC and the University of Sheffield’s Factory 2050.

Those headline names are not the buyers. They run their own engineering departments and build at a scale a bespoke software partner has no business chasing: here, they are evidence of the cluster, not a market. The firms that feel the gap are the ones their presence creates: the precision machinists, fabricators and component makers in the surrounding supply chain who hold the tolerances and the certifications the primes demand, but run on disconnected systems and employ no developers. They have heard the Made Smarter and Industry 4.0 message louder than almost anyone in the country. Their own shop floor simply records too little for them to act on it.

The Floor Records Nothing, So the Estimate Drifts Every Time

The data-dark shop floor is a recognised regional problem, not a vague one. Sheffield-founded FourJaw built a whole business on it. Their plug-and-play sensors give SME manufacturers real-time visibility of machine utilisation and downtime, because so many works managers cannot answer basic questions without leaving the office:

  • What is the machine actually doing? Utilisation, downtime causes and operator time are not captured live, so true capacity and the real bottleneck stay guesses until someone walks the floor and counts.
  • What did this job really consume? Setup time, machine time and material are reconstructed from memory and spreadsheets after the fact, so the actual cost of a finished job is known late and only roughly.

The sharp end of this is estimating. A subcontract shop wins work by quoting, and most quotes here are still built from spreadsheet assumptions about setup, cycle time and overhead recovery rather than from what comparable jobs actually ran. Because nothing on the floor feeds back, the assumptions never get corrected: the same optimistic setup figure gets reused, the awkward second op that always overruns never shows up in the model, and margin erodes job after job without anyone able to point to where. The data that would tighten every future quote is generated on the floor every day. It just evaporates instead of being captured.

That feedback loop (captured actuals flowing back into the next estimate) is the single highest-value thing most of these firms are missing, and it is almost never what an off-the-shelf MRP gives them on its own.

The Costing Gap: MRP and Accounts as Two Separate Truths

Most of these firms already run an MRP or ERP system built for exactly their kind of work. Statii is a cloud MRP designed for small bespoke engineering and fabrication firms (its founders ran metal-fabrication businesses themselves), covering estimating, job costing and shop-floor data capture with links out to Sage, Xero and QuickBooks. 123Insight and Access FactoryMaster are widely used UK SME MRP and ERP platforms with WIP and job costing built in. The problem is rarely the MRP. It is that the MRP and the accounting package stay two separate authoritative tools, so job costs, WIP and material consumption are rekeyed by hand and true margin per job lands as an after-the-fact reconciliation rather than a live figure the works manager can act on this week.

For aerospace and defence work, traceability and AS9100 chain-of-custody add their own demands on top. That is regional ground the Sheffield hub covers, and the deeper, more common pain in the supply chain is the costing and estimating blind spot above, not the audit file. The shift the whole district is being pushed toward is digital, captured data; the firms still running on memory and spreadsheets feel that push hardest. Make UK and Infor’s 2023 supply-chain survey found that even among manufacturers who call supplier monitoring critical, a large share still do not use any digital technology to do it. The intent runs well ahead of the capture. The firms that close that gap first will quote tighter and react faster than the unit next door.

Most of this work starts by capturing data that is already being generated and routing it to where a decision gets made, not by replacing the MRP you already run:
