What Is a Keyword

A keyword is a word or phrase people type into search engines. Learn how keywords drive SEO strategy and how to choose the right ones for your business.

Definition

A keyword is a word or phrase that people type into a search engine when they are looking for something. In the context of SEO and digital marketing, keywords are the terms you want your website to appear for. "Accountant in Manchester," "best CRM for small business," and "how to fix a leaking tap" are all keywords. They can be a single word, but more often they are phrases. The more specific the phrase, the clearer the searcher's intent.

Why It Matters

Keywords are the foundation of both SEO and paid search. They are how you connect what you offer with what people are searching for. Choosing the right keywords means targeting terms that your potential customers use, that have enough search volume to be worth pursuing, and where you have a realistic chance of ranking. Getting this wrong means either targeting terms nobody searches for or competing against giants you cannot outrank. Keyword research (the process of identifying which terms to target) should inform your page structure, content strategy, and ad campaigns. It is not a one-off task; search behaviour changes, and your keyword strategy should evolve with it.

Example

A gym owner assumes people search for “fitness facility” and optimises their site around that term. Keyword research reveals that their local audience searches for “gym near me,” “personal trainer in [city],” and “pay-as-you-go gym.” By shifting their content to target these real search terms, they start appearing in results that their potential customers are using.
