    Step 01

Set up and optimise your Google Business Profile

For a local advice firm, the Google Business Profile is often the highest-intent free channel you have: people searching for a financial adviser near them find you here.

    Do it yourself

    • Create and verify the profile with your accurate name, address, phone and services.
    • Populate it with your niche, your service list and a strong description of who you help.
    • Add photos, and keep your hours and contact details accurate.
    • Plan from the start how you will gather the reviews that feed it.

Common mistake · An unverified or half-filled profile, or name, address and phone details that read differently across the web and dilute local ranking.

    List on the adviser directories

Directories are where a meaningful share of advice-seekers actively look for someone to trust, and a ready-made channel for a new firm with no SEO history yet.

    Do it yourself

    • Set up profiles on the main directories: VouchedFor, review-led and searchable by postcode, indicatively around £54 plus VAT a month; and Unbiased, a free tier plus pay-per-enquiry, indicatively around £43 plus VAT per enquiry, with matching.
    • Complete each profile fully, with your services, specialism, fees, location and credentials, since completeness and displayed fees drive enquiries.
    • Decide your directory budget deliberately: directories are in slow decline but still generate real enquiries, so treat the spend as a test.
    • Wire every directory enquiry into your CRM so nothing is lost.

Common mistake · A skeletal directory profile with no fees and no reviews, which converts poorly against the complete competitor profiles beside it.

    Step 03

    Build a review-gathering habit

For a trust-led purchase with no track record, third-party reviews are your most persuasive proof, and they compound over time.

    Do it yourself

    • Choose where your reviews live: your Google Business Profile plus your chosen directory.
    • Build a simple, compliant ask into your process (reviews and testimonials count as financial promotions).
    • Ask at the natural high point, once a recommendation is implemented and the value is clear.
    • Display the reviews you gather on your website and your profiles.

Common mistake · Never asking at all, or asking in a way that is not compliant or feels transactional.
